Family Photo Outfit Inspiration
Having family photos taken can be a fun and memorable experience, once you have an outfit laid out that is. For many people, selecting clothing and accessories is the most stressful aspect of being photographed. Even more so if you are attempting to dress your entire family to complement one another. To help you tackle this task we’ve compiled some tips for selecting outfits for the fall season, including popular and camera-pleasing color combinations.
Shop Smart
Out of the gate, you may have a difficult time conjuring up an idea for an outfit. However the easiest option is shopping for the entire family from one collection, if possible. Several stores offer both adult and childrens clothing, and use the same color schemes throughout. For example, Old Navy, Gap and Gap Kids, Zara, and Target. These retailers will become your best friend for family photographs. Secondly, be sure that each member of your family dresses to their personal style, yet is semi-casual and comfortable. Everyone should look like themselves and suit the location. In other words, don’t risk your safety or sanity by wearing heels to shoot in an open field. Lastly, don’t feel like you have to purchase new clothes. If you feel confident in your family’s wardrobe and styling abilities, there is no reason to spend more money than is necessary.
Neutral Not Plain
People tend to be afraid of color when it comes to family photographs. If this is the case for you, then there are plenty of neutral colors to choose from. Don’t however make the mistake of placing every person in the exact same color. We know white can be an easy choice, but this look is overdone and doesn’t accurately display your family’s personality. Consider the following combinations instead, and be sure to utilize various materials to your advantage. When it comes to neutrals, tweeds and knits look stunning in a fall setting and will add depth.
-
Cream, white, varying shades of brown, dark grey and denim, with gold accessories.
-
Grey, white, beige and blush.
-
White, various shades of grey and light blue, with silver accessories.
-
Beige, sage, denim, white, with gold or silver accessories.
-
Deep red, various shades of brown, and cream.
Don’t Be Afraid to Go Bold
Although neutral colors provide a clean and sophisticated look, others may prefer something more fun. Not to mention wearing clothing that features color is more reminiscent of your family on a daily basis. You can have various colors, patterns or textures, as long as they lend to an overall palette. Consider large stripes (no pin stripes please), plaid, or a large floral print. Just be sure to avoid any neon colors that could cast color onto your face. We recommend any of the following color palettes below:
-
Burgundy, various shades of brown, grey, and yellow.
-
Olive, teal, denim, cream and brown.
-
Various shades of orange, denim, brown and cream with gold accessories.
-
Dark blue, grey, denim, white, mustard and brown.
-
Various shades of deep red, olive and mustard, with gold accessories.
Don’t Over Accessorize
Accessories are important, but they are easy to over-do. Make sure that they pair nicely with your outfit, yet don’t detract from it. Similarly, items that are too gaudy will distract the eye from your beautiful family. Avoid loading up on jewelry, and instead opt for a single necklace, bracelet and ring. For men, a simple watch is timeless. During the fall season, layers lend an especially cozy look. A light jacket or vest overtop of a long sleeve shirt is nice, as are scarves. For shoes, a clean pair of semi-casual boots pair perfectly for both men and women, whether they are short or tall.
