The location you choose for your photoshoot can make or break your photographs. Choosing the right location, that aligns with your vision and style, will make for a more well-rounded and charming photograph. Lucky for you, there are plenty of places to choose from right here in Houston! Check out some of the best places for a photoshoot in Houston, Texas, to get inspired for your next session.
River Oaks Oak Trees
A luxury residential area, River Oaks is grand but with southern roots. The area features lavish homes, as well as a lush landscape with majestic oak trees. With an old time atmosphere, photographs beneath the towering mature oaks are romantic and elegant. Plus, the houses are situated relatively far from the road, so that the vibrant lawns are on show. It is a beautiful location for family portraits or an elegant engagement session.
Sabine Street Bridge
Famous for the Houston skyline backdrop, Sabine Street Bridge is easy to access and oh so beautiful. This iconic location makes for breathtaking photographs during the daytime, around sunset, and even once the street lights come on. Whether you are going for something casual or elegant, the background of skyscrapers is a popular choice for city lovers.
Buffalo Bayou Park
A short walk from Sabine Street Bridge, the Buffalo Bayou Park is ideal for those who want a mix of both the city and a bit of nature. The park features lush greenspaces, winding trails and a bridge, making it very versatile. There is even an area with a perfect view of the skyline. The location makes it great for couples sessions as well as family photography.
The Black Labrador
A fun and eccentric backdrop, the Black Labrador is a former british style pub in the Montrose area. Although now closed, the exterior remains intact, with a lush garden and vibrant pops of color here and there. There is even a bright red british phone booth! This location makes for extra cute engagement sessions, should this style suit your personality.
Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park
Considered the centerpiece for Uptown Houston, the Waterwall Park features a 64-foot semi-circular architectural fountain that re-circulates 11,000 gallons of water per minute as it cascades down the water wall structure’s inner and outer walls. It is surrounded by a beautiful manicured park lawn which is surrounded by trees, so that it appears relatively cut off from the surrounding buildings. The area would make for a beautiful picnic session or a family photoshoot.
Pine Lake Ranch
A quick drive from Downtown Houston, Pine Lake Ranch encompasses 25-rolling acres. The area is a photographers dream come true, with a majestic live oak, sprawling fields, and a sparkling lake. It is so incredibly versatile, whether you are a couple looking for an intimate stroll or a family who wants some lighthearted candid photographs.
Bayou Bend
Located in the River Oaks neighborhood, Bayou Bend is an opulent garden and natural woodland area. Covering 14 acres, it features gorgeous walkways, water fountains, and a bridge. Elegant and manicured to perfection, this location makes a beautiful backdrop for a couples engagement session or family portraits. Not to mention it is a wonderful sight to see in and of itself!
Galveston Beaches
A historic location, Galveston Beach is one of the most popular photograph spots, and for good reason. With breathtaking views, sandy beaches and an amusement park in the distance, there are so many photo ops. There is also the Galveston Pleasure pier, which is perfect for the popular under the pier shots. I love this area for your typical family shoot, as well as lively and romantic couple’s shoots.
Smither Park
Houston’s first art-inspired greenspace, Smither Park is constantly evolving. A creative urban space, the half-acre plot of land features colorful works of art, including elaborate mosaics. This location is perfect for the unique and eclectic couple, whether for a recent engagement or annual portraits.
Rice University
With manicured lawns and bushes, as well as European architecture, Rice University is a popular destination for bridal and portrait photography. The columns and archways of Lovett Hall are magnificent, as are many of the other buildings throughout the campus. Here you will also find beautiful walkways shaded by low hanging trees and water features. Whether or not you attended the university, it is a great backdrop for professional headshots as well as preppy or elegant photo sessions.

Karrie Bennett - This is great feedback! I should probably create a new blog for Greater Houston Area and include Pine Lake Ranch in that one vs. the general Houston one. However, Pine Lake Ranch is most definitely worth the trip. You will have to schedule time with the owners as it is privately owned and not open to the general public, but it is a gorgeous location to shoot and they are always welcoming photographers to shoot at the venue!

Christi - some information on "best places for a photoshoot in houston" is incorrect. pine lake ranch is in montgomery, texas! it is an hour plus from downtown houston-- not a quick drive. probably confused with "pine lake drive"--about a 20 minute drive from downtown, houston. (but...that is a residential street) my clients went based off of this post, and if i hadn't confirmed-- we would've been on literally two completely different sides of town! LOL. i just don't want anyone else assuming this! thanks for the recommendations and FINALLY someone has a good blog on this subject! beautiful photos!
