Before you know it the end of the year will be here, and you will be overwhelmed with graduation parties and college shopping lists. Make sure that your child's last year in high school does not pass by without some memorabilia. After all, it is one of the last times you will be able to coerce them into doing a posed and styled shoot! Before arriving for the appointment, there are several steps to take so that the session runs smoothly, and the pictures come out perfect. Consider these tasks to ensure that you, and your child, come prepared ‒ and to avoid any last minute stress!
-
Set up a hygiene routine - Let’s get real for a moment҅‒ teenagers have acne. We have editing tools for a reason, but teenagers tend to be more confident if they feel prepared and clean cut. Make sure they have a solid routine going, at least a couple of weeks in advance, so that their skin has a fair shot at clearing up.
-
Visit a salon - This step is not for everyone, but some people prefer to have their hair and nails done professionally. If not, that is okay! Just make sure any chipped nail polish is removed, and that if they have a quirky hair color or style, that they will be happy with it looking back.
-
Show off some school pride - If your child is especially fond of their high school years, plan to bring some gear. Letterman jackets always make for a great picture, as do cheerleading, dance, or any other athletic uniforms. You can also tie in prestigious or meaningful, trophies and awards.
-
Plan on an outfit change - Always come prepared for an outfit mishap! Anything can happen, and it usually does. Several outfits will ensure the session continues should anything happen, but it also offers a variety of images. Besides school pride, parents tend to enjoy getting a clean-cut image to hang on the wall. Make sure any clothes are neat and wrinkle free, and try to be organized. Have all of your child's accessories separated in individual baggies, so that you aren’t wasting any time digging in the car seats for a lost earring or watch. The same can go for packing shoes, or the entire ensemble.
-
Feature their personality - What are senior photographs really about? Whatever makes your child happy of course! This is your chance to capture their personality in a picture. This can include props, from a ball to a uniform, a musical instrument, a game; maybe even a location! Get creative with your ideas, and make sure to include the child who is being photographed in the decision ‒ what means the most to them may surprise you!
-
Get a good night's sleep - Let's face it, any activity is a bummer when you are running off of minimal sleep. Plus you tend to look worse for wear. Making sure your child has had a restful night will not only make them happy to be there, but will guarantee more authentic photographs.
-
Show up on time - It is better to be safe than sorry, so plan on showing up ahead of time. Double, or triple check, that you know when the session is, so that you don’t miss out on valuable time ‒ or in many cases, lighting! The sun goes down quickly when you are on a clock, so showing up on time will make for a smoother, enjoyable session.
