Which Style of Newborn Photography Should You Choose?
After giving birth, setting aside time for photographs is likely one of the last things on your mind. Preparing to bring your new baby home and set up a new routine, all on minimal sleep, is stressful enough! Thankfully, there are a few different types of newborn photography to choose from, to suit your limited time and needs. Trust us, you are going to want to look back on those tiny fingers and toes, squished nose and pudgy rolls. After all, they won’t stay that way for long!
Fresh 48
A ‘Fresh 48’ session, is often preferred by busy parents who want to get a handful of quality pictures without much of a hassle. Your photographer will come to your location within 48 hours of the birth, whether it be in-home, or at a hospital. More often than not, these images will consist of your baby in the hospital issued swaddle and hat. Mom and dad may have a cuddle with them in bed, or they may remain in their bassinet. The photographer will may also feature their birth certificate, going home outfit, or birth information; such as time, weight and height. On a side note, if you are at a hospital, it is important check if they allow outside photographers. Some will only allow partnered, or in-house photographers.
Lifestyle
Lifestyle newborn sessions are exactly what they sound like, a glimpse into your everyday activities. These can include sleeping, cuddling, feedings, playtime, or even just admiring. They typically take place within the first two weeks following birth, but are not specific to age. Just remember, the earlier the better if you are wanting to capture the sleepy and cuddly demeanor of a newborn. Since they are candid, they will take place in or around your home, often in the nursery or other common areas. These shoots may include lighting if your home is overly dark, but natural lighting is commonplace. You want to capture an organic image of your home and family life, with the newest addition. For this reason, you should find a skilled photographer who you feel comfortable around, and can work in a natural setting. Otherwise, your discomfort may transfer into stiff or posed images ‒ the exact opposite of the desired product.
Posed
If you are looking for high quality, professionally lit and styled images, then a posed newborn session will suit you well. These sessions typically take place in a photographers studio, where they have complete control over the environment. For example, the temperature. A nice 80 to 85 degrees fahrenheit, is the perfect setting to make your baby sleepy and pliable for posing. This heat closely mimics the temperature of a woman's womb, making babies less likely to shift from the desired position. Between 5 to 14 days old, they also have yet to realize the reach of their bodies. They can remain in tightly curled, not to mention adorable, womb-like positions for a decent amount of time. In fact, they tend to get so comfortable, they make some great expressions ‒ like pouty lips or a wide grin. A warning: posing a baby can be a bit tedious. Mom and dad should be prepared for some quality admiring time ‒ but who’s complaining?
