How to Style and Prepare For Your Engagement Session
Having your engagement photos taken is without a doubt one of the most enjoyable aspects of wedding planning. There is nowhere near the amount of pressure you will feel when it comes to photographing your wedding day, nor are there any formalities. This session is all about having fun and basking in all of the post-engagement feels. Keep reading for tips on selecting outfits and other ways to prepare, so that you and your fiance feel confident and camera ready.
Choose Your Outfits
When selecting your outfits, it is important that you complement one another but do not match. Wearing items of similar, but not exact, colors or hues. Be sure to dress like yourself and comfortably, whether that it be for the current season or weather. Lastly, choose clothing that is flattering to both your body and the camera. We recommend straying from tight materials, overly bright colors or repetitive patterns.
Clean Your Ring
We know you are eager to show off that new rock on your finger, so make sure it is clean! To accomplish this, you can go to a jeweler or use a solution at home. Depending on the session location and what you are doing, it may get a little dirty. Keep a bottle of ring cleaner on hand to ensure it is perfectly polished for a close-up.
Discuss What to Expect
Men seem to have a difficult time understanding what it means when asked to cuddle for a photograph. They may also be completely caught off guard when instructed to act naturally. Men are accustomed to smiling for portrait photography, not casual shoots. A few days prior to your session, sit your fiance down and show him examples of your photographers previous engagement work. This will help him understand what to expect, including how he will be asked to pose.
Get All Dolled Up
Having your hair, makeup, and nails professionally done for your engagement shoot is great practice for the wedding. It is an opportunity to test different products and see whether or not it can withstand hot, humid, or inclement weather. Similarly, men can test hairstyles and hair holding products. Make sure their hair is locked in place, but not stiff, by using a a gentle hairspray. If they intend to have facial hair come the day of your wedding, it will also need to be styled.
Bring Back-Ups
Expect the unexpected, and have back up shoes and clothes on hand! Accidents happen, heels break and unsightly stains appear out of thin air. It will be okay! As long as you have another set of clothing on hand, you can easily change and continue the session. You might also bring emergency hair spray, face products, or bug spray for spur of the moment field frolicking.
Be on Time!
Photographers choose the time of your shoot for a specific reason, such as lighting. If you are even 10 minutes late, this can drastically impact the amount of time they have to take photographs. Set an alarm on your phone and mark it on your calendar, to be sure that you arrive in a timely manner. If possible, try to arrive early, rather than right on time. This will give you a few minutes to take care of any last minute touch-ups.
