When it comes to having your photo taken the background is important! The perfect location should not only align with your vision, but your personality. Checkout some of my favorite places for photoshoots in Dallas, Texas, to get inspired for your next photo session. (ethan Barnes)
1. Deep Ellum Graffiti Walls
East of Downtown Dallas, Deep Ellum is a lively neighborhood featuring live music and delicious dining options. More recently it has become an art scene, with local, national and international artists showcasing their work through the 42 Murals project. Colorful and inspiring street art and graffiti decks the walls, making for gorgeous photo backdrops. The large variety of artwork here makes it a popular choice as it complements a range of styles and moods.
2. Lakeside Park in Highland Park
In the northernmost area of Highland Park, Lakeside Park is a quiet getaway from the sprawling downtown scene. Complete with manicured lawns, gorgeous bridges and even a manmade waterfall, this area is perfect for a lush photoshoot. It being well maintained makes it a good choice for those who want an outdoor session that is more preppy. Perhaps for fun candid family photos or a playful engagement picnic session.
3. White Rock Lake
A reservoir in North-east Dallas, White Rock Lake features some of the most beautiful natural greenery. There are plenty of fields and wooded areas to choose from, perfect for portraits. Aside from the lush lawns it also has a stunning lake and dock. This area is an ideal location for lakeside golden hour or sunset photographs. It is a great option for couple’s who are planning a beach or destination wedding but would prefer an engagement session close to home.
4. Fountain Place
Located in the Arts District of Downtown Dallas, Fountain Place is an architectural beauty. A 5.5. acre plaza located at the base of a glass, geometrically shaped skyscraper, it is unique and wonderful. Both manmade and natural elements collide, with bald cypress trees in circular granite planters surrounded by terraced pools of water. Under the shade of the trees, the area feels somewhat private, making it a wonderful choice for intimate engagement sessions.
5. Design District
Eclectic yet upscale, the Dallas Design District consists of interior design showrooms, art galleries, fine dining establishments, and most recently, luxurious apartment homes. The exterior of which offers endless photoshoot opportunities. This urban block offers a variety of buildings with different textures, colors, artwork and architecture to choose from. It is a great location for commercial shoots as well as an edgy and fun-filled couples session.
6. Rockledge Park
This beautiful park boasts some of the best scenic views! Situated on Grapevine Lake, you will have free range of both wooded and lakeside areas. Hiking trails make accessing more remote locations possible, where the underbrush is green and lush. Or, carefully walk along the rocky ridges and cliffs surrounding the lake. Here you can capture incredibly romantic photographs, with the vast body of water and a sunset for a backdrop.
7. Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden
Boasting everything an arboretum and botanical garden should, this location is rich in some of the most colorful plantlife. A popular wedding venue, it also has gorgeous walkways, water features and unique architectural structures. It is always different depending on the season you visit, which should be factored in to when you book your photo session. I find the best time of the year to be spring, when the flowers are in full bloom (between late February and early April), although fall is also gorgeous.
8. Arbor Hills Nature Preserve
A 200 acre nature preserve, Arbor Hills is home to some of the most beautiful untouched nature. The walking trails and open areas are perfect for photos, especially from spring to the fall. During the warmer months the area is lush and green, and almost ethereal. Meanwhile the fall brings out such amazing colors of orange and rust. This location is great for all kinds of shoots, although couples will love traipsing around the area more so than a family packing young ones.
9. Southern Methodist University
Whether or not you attended the campus, Southern Methodist University is a stunning location for a photoshoot. The grand buildings and perfectly manicured lawns are breathtaking, with so many spaces to pose and wander. This location is wonderful both for a casual session or something more elegant. It would work as a wedding venue, a preppy engagement session or even professional headshots.
10. Bishop Arts District
In the heart of North Oak Cliff, the Bishop Arts District is an independent neighborhood with a whole lot of history. Since being revitalized it is now home to all sorts of cute boutiques and stores. The old buildings feature architecture from the 1920s, now touched up with fun pops of color here and there. This location gives off a lovely small-town feel and makes for a unique and super chic area for a photoshoot.
