Lifestyle Session vs Studio Session for Newborn Photography
Whether you are looking to capture intimate snuggles or get some close ups of your baby’s fingers and toes, it all falls in the category of newborn photography. Depending on your goals, there are two types of newborn sessions to consider: lifestyle and studio. Each one will deliver impressive photos of the newest addition to your family, although in different settings and featuring unique poses. Learn the differences between the two, so that you can confidently determine which to choose.
When to Choose a Lifestyle Session
-
If you want to capture everyday interactions between baby and family, particularly mom and dad. This is the time to capture that intimate initial indescribable bond, and all of the other emotions you feel. The photographer may assist with posing by recommending where you move, or how you hold the baby. However the objective of a lifestyle shoot, is to capture photos of you doing everyday things.
-
If you want to have photos featuring or in the comfort of your own home. These images are typically taken in areas that you and baby frequent or feel most cozy. This could be on the couch, your new rocking chair, or all piled in bed together. This also means that your baby will be posed in completely natural and comfy positions.
-
If you want natural, soft lighting. In some circumstances a photographer may opt to pack all of their lighting equipment, however they often still attempt to replicate natural light.
-
If you would rather not have any props, or would prefer to use items from your home. Props are typically not used during lifestyle shoots, other than what is already available in the scene. This could include toys, use of the baby’s crib, and other personal items.
-
If you are on a budget. Lifestyle shoots tend to cost less, as they do not require rented studio space or that any props be provided. If a photographer does pack lighting equipment however, then the price may go up. Be sure that you fully understand what a photographers lifestyle session price and package entails.
When to Choose a Studio Session
-
If you are not comfortable with a photographer coming into your home. A studio session takes place in, you guessed it, a photographers studio. Studios however vary in style, and can be anything from a square room with no windows to a space that closely resembles an actual house.
-
If you prefer detailed shots of your baby over family interaction. While a studio session can include some family interaction, it is always posed. Rather there is a focus on the infant alone. Meaning the photographer will takeover posing your baby, and you may spend more time sitting behind the lens than in front of it.
-
If you want photos with studio lighting. Unless a studio consists of large windows that allow natural light, studio lighting is the norm. You may prefer this type of lighting if you want to see every little roll of the baby’s soft skin, each little eyelash, and the tiniest wisp of hair.
-
If you want to include props. Props are incredibly common for studio sessions, and in some cases an entire scene is created. This can include a backdrop, whatever the baby is placed in or on, any decorations, and can even what the baby wears. The setup can be extremely intricate or as simple as a bean bag for posing.
-
If you have a bigger budget. A studio session will be more expensive due to the cost of the space, all of the backdrops and props the photographer had to purchase, as well as any lighting or camera equipment.
-
If your baby is less than two weeks old. Unfortunately, to achieve those cute curled up poses a baby should ideally be no more than 2 weeks old. This ensures that they can be posed without constant rearranging, thanks to their near constant state of sleep.
